Cleveland Indians and their bling

signing

Cleveland Indians, Jhonny Peralta and Kelly Shoppach were in Sheffield Village for an autograph signing session at the new Key Bank. These are never the most interesting assignments because the pictures are just backs of heads or profiles. Add in the fact that the players are generally not all that excited about hanging out with the unwashed masses.

As I was standing there I couldn’t help but notice the bling these guys were wearing. The watch Shoppach was wearing was huge. Peraltta had a slightly smaller watch but he made up for it with all the diamonds and a seriously heavy expensive looking stainless steel bracelet loaded with diamonds.

Jhonny Peraltta wins the bling show down with no effort at all. He’s wearing the Cartier Santos 100, diamond watch. Jomashop.com lists this watch at $92,500. The good news is you can get it at a reduced $78,625. Like I said before he has the bracelet, that has to be worth considerably more that $10,000.

If you want to pull off the same look on a non Major League budget go online and look around for a replica. Those are going for $260 on most of the sites I saw. You could buy 300 of the knockoffs for the price of Peraltta’s real thing.

While Shoppach didn’t spend quite as much money his watch is frigging huge. the picture doesn’t even come close to showing how big this thing really is. The watch is a Breitling Bentley Limited Edition and while I couldn’t find this exact watch online something that looks like it can be purchased on Gemnation.com for a respectable $9200. Shoppach’s watch has diamonds on each of the hour markers so that will push the price higher. I ran across a watch like his with a diamond bezel that went for $27,000.

Again, the knockoff route will get you a similar watch for $250. You could even pickup the super blinged version of the watch for that price.

I found myself in a conversation with someone who was bemoaning the fact that he had to buy a special display case for his watches, that each cost more that I’d spend on watches if I lived to be a thousand years old.

Seems the really expensive watches are self winding and will stop telling the time if you set them down for a day or two. So, you need a special holder/display, that gyrates in order to move the little self winding counter weight in the watch.

Luckily, there are places that specialize in keeping your valuable watch wound, such as http://www.watchwinderstore.com .

So, we finally get around to the part where I say something like, “No way I’d ever pay *that* much for a watch!” when the subject of price comes up.

The answer that was quick in coming, and quite possibly practiced, was, “You couldn’t afford one even if you did wish to purchase one.”

I thought, first thinking “*cuss words*” then realizing why people do buy such expensive bling.

The reasoning has really eluded me, like there’s a block, or I’m brain damaged and just couldn’t see the light, but with that cutting statement, it all became clear as crystal, as to why someone would want so many of these expensive watches that they need special display cases to keep them wound!

People actually NEED watches that cost $20K or $100K, to remind themselves and others that they are better than most.

The more expensive the watch, the higher one resides on the food chain of, *who’s better than whom*!

    I’m not a Commie, nor am I a common criminal…

But if given the opportunity of smacking one of these smug son of a guns on the head, allowing me the time to take his watch away, then grind it into the sidewalk under my heel…

    …I might be tempted.

Sure, I might feel good about my crimes for a couple of minutes, but that wouldn’t change anything.

They can’t buy a save, but those watches sure are purdy

Fancy car, yes. A watch over $500, no. Most costly one I had was around $375, but it broke and wasn’t fixable. So now I stick with the under $100 and the knock-a-rounds from or local discount house for will under $50. Considering water, fish guts, garden dirt, chance of being knocked it the head, an an expensive watch isn’t worth it.
