Virus warning, UPS spoof e-mail

I almost fell for a spoof email today. I received an email that claimed to be from UPS for a package sent July 1. I use UPS a lot, so it didn’t strike me as an odd e-mail.

But I do know that spammers and the slimy virus guys live by .exe and .zip files so the zip file attached to the e-mail got my attention. I Googled the keywords and voila, there was a copy of the bogus e-mail I received.

“Unfortunately we were not able to deliver postal package you sent on July the 1st in time because the recipient’s address is not correct.

Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our office

Your UPS”
According to the blog MX Lab, the virus was checked by 34 virus detection programs and only 8 caught the latest version of the virus. This isn’t the kind of vius you want to mess with, either.

The file contains threat characteristics of ZBot — a banking trojan that disables firewall, steals sensitive financial data (credit card numbers, online banking login details), makes screen snapshots, downloads additional components, and provides a hacker with the remote access to the compromised system. It opens backdoors on infected computer to allow malicious attacker unauthorized access.

So if this type of e-mail makes it through your spam filter and arrives in your inbox, be forewarned: Delete it without opening it.

Thank you! I couldn’t find any details on UPS website. This is still circulating.. Mine had a package sent date of 25 Nov.
